‘Live like the Locals’ Yarra Valley Destination Guidedk_mg_8599-copy

Danny Kane, General Manager of Oakridge Wines, multi-award winning winery, amazing floor-to-ceiling modern Cooker, Denton & Marshall-designed modern event space with stunning floor-to-ceiling windows framing the stunning Coldstream, Yarra Valley vines & view.

Moving to the Yarra Valley from Hong Kong, may have seemed an initial culture shock however, Danny and his family having lived and worked in Daylesford took to living in the Yarra Valley with gusto. The essence of strong and tight-knit community, incredible food & wine providores, who live & breath their local & sustainable ethos for food & wine. This locally sourced, foraged or grown in the Oakridge Wines own vegetable garden with Executive Chef, Matt Stone’s widely-acclaimed food and David Bignell, Chief Winemaker’s wines, string of accolades for the Oakridge Wines Chardonnay variety…it is a great place to start your weekend away in the Yarra Valley.

MJD: How long have you been with Oakridge Wines and what do you love about working here
DK:
Nearly 7 years working during construction of the new building working with Denton, Corker & Marshall architects to design this great space. I love the wine which is outstanding, the venue, the people, the dynamic nature of the business and great owners

MJD: What do you love about living & working in the Yarra Valley?
DK: Wine, wine, wine opps sorry, don’t forget the views, the proximity to Melbourne, the food variety and the amazing venues we have on offer

EAT: Oakridge Wines of course….I know I am a little biased but the food Executive Chef, Matt Stone, is producing is outstanding and his passion for local ingredients, farmers &  his sustainable ethos is incredibly important. For a quick lunch, try the Sushi roles at Alchemy in Healesville’s main street are so good and so fresh.
Sunday mornings at the Kane household spells French Toast, Maple Syrup and Bacon for house guests! If I am feeling lazy, the ‘breakfast shared board’ at Hutch and Co in Lilydale always hits the spot

SIP:
The balcony at Oakridge Wines at sunset overlooking the Valley is hard to go past watching the vines change with the seasons….not a bad view from the office every day!
Four Pillars Gin  is an excellent set up if you are a couple or group and the gin is really good, my fav’ is the ‘Shiraz Gin’…wine & gin – a great combination!
The beer’s always cold at the Healesville Hotel and one of the reasons I love living in the country is you always bump into someone you know

STAY:
Budget & Chilled…camping in the Warburton Camp Grounds beside the river is pretty spectacular especially in warmer weather
Luxury….get away in Big River View private home –  very cool house and great for a group of friends or extended family
Town…. Furmston House right behind the Healesville hotel
RACV Healesville Country Club is amazing for golfers or family, really close to Healesville or Yarra Valley Lodge

PLAY:
Golf  – lots of course to choose from, catch a fish up at Buxton Trout Farm – you are guaranteed to catch a trout
During wine vintage, crush grapes at Oakridge Wines or have a quick game at the resident bocce court….warning, it can get VERY competitive!

MUST DOs:
